Alex Trebek

Alex Trebek, host of Jeopardy!, dies at 80

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Alex Trebek, host of Jeopardy! for over 35 years. Trebek passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends. He was 80 years old. Trebek was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in March 2019 and continued to host Jeopardy! throughout his chemotherapy treatment. He used to know who won jeopardy tonight?

Trebek was born in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, on July 22, 1940. He began his career in broadcasting in 1961 as a reporter and newscaster for CBC Radio. He moved to television in 1963, hosting a music program called Music Hop. In 1973, Trebek was offered the job of host for a new game show called The Wizard of Odds. He accepted and went on to host several other game shows before being offered the hosting gig on Jeopardy in 1984.

Trebek became an American citizen in 1998 and continued to host Jeopardy! until his death. He won numerous awards during his career, including five Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host. In 2011, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Trebek is survived by his wife Jean Currivan Trebek and children Matthew, Emily, and Nicky.

How Jeopardy! Changed Alex Trebek’s Life

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning in 2014, Alex Trebek spoke about how hosting Jeopardy! changed his life. “It opened up opportunities for me that I never would have had if I hadn’t been the host of this program,” he said. “I’ve been able to meet people from all walks of life.”

One of those people was former First Lady Barbara Bush. In 2004, Mrs. Bush appeared as a contestant on Jeopardy!’s Battle of the First Ladies special. She donated her winnings to literacy programs. After the taping, Mrs. Bush invited Trebek and his wife Jean to lunch at the White House. “It was one of the thrills of my life,” he said.

Trebek also used his platform to raise awareness about various causes close to his heart. In 2001, he publicly disclosed that he had been diagnosed with depression and considered suicide after losing two close friends to cancer within a span of weeks. He spoke openly about his struggles with depression in order to help break the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage others to seek help if they need it.

He also used Jeopardy! to bring attention to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), an organization dedicated to funding research and providing support to patients and families affected by pancreatic cancer—the same disease that would eventually claim Trebek’s life. In 2018, he filmed a public service announcement for PanCAN in which he urged viewers to “join me in making one goal for 2019: To find cures for cancer.”

Alex Trebek was more than just the host of America’s favorite game show—he was a beloved figure who touched the lives of millions of people around the world. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace, Alex Trebek.
